and GRANTS will award the first annual Katherine Bunch Back-of-the-Envelope
award in Fall 1999. Katherine Bunch was an educator and staff developer
with over twenty-five years of experience in education. She began
her career as a special educator, receiving her doctoral degree
in special education from the University of Mississippi. She went
on to work with high school students who had special talents in
mathematics and science at the Mississippi School for Math and Science.
Katherine was an avid athlete who ran several miles every day. She
left two sons and a cockateil when she died of cancer in January
1996. Her dedication to education and the way that she worked quietly,
behind the scenes to support teachers and students are the qualities
that we recognize in the award named in her honor.
We
will be looking for nominations of teachers, mentors, leaders, coaches.
We are looking for individuals who have made a difference in the
life of a young person. Qualified candiates may be teachers, youth
workers, volunteers, teacher aides, principals, community leaders,
grandparents, or coaches.
Stay
tuned for information about the award in late spring 1999.
