  • How does one offer a virtual cup of tea or give a bouquet of flowers online?
  • How do you invite people into a community?
  • How do you make people feel at home?
Just as with in-person groups, electronic communities that work effectively have several characteristics in common. The members of the community share a common interest, purpose, or mission, or share values, or ideals. Community members agree to work together on ideas and issues to enhance their individual and collective work. Our process for developing online communities is built on the premise that online collaboration happens most productively when participants have a:
  • reason to log onto the online space,
  • need and interest in participating and contributing to a community;
  • focused communication.
