My colleague, Julia Phelps, who is the assistant superintendent in the Amesbury Public Schools, calls online forums, Staff Development in Your Pajamas. What she means is that you can participate in conversations relevant to your work at times convenient to you. Kathy Renfrew, a teacher in Peacham, Vermont does this every thing early in the morning. Before she goes to school and before her family awakes, she makes herself some coffee and participates in online conversations with her colleagues about teaching science to her sixth graders. Other people we know work late in the evening, on a Saturday afternoon, or Sunday evening. Most professionals today spend time upgrading their skills and knowledge. Often they do this away from the office or classroom. Being able to sip a cup of coffee and work in your pajamas makes it so much easier to support ongoing professional development for your colleagues.
