My first day activity for physics class is the paper helicopter from a 2cm by 10cm (approximately) piece of recycled paper. I have them construct their first piece of scientific equipment with expensive materials and caution them to follow directions because the materials cannot be replaced.

My Principles of Technology students usually make origami(spelling) frogs from index cards and measure in metrics their jumps.

This year, my first for teaching chemistry, I plan to use drops on a penny the first day. Our first day the periods fluctuate from 20 min to 40 min. I need to be very versatile. I also plan to do Oobleck, Metric Olympics, and surface tension with a pan of milk and food coloring to start off my chemistry classes the first two weeks in lab.
