Subj: First day resource cards
From: Kim
In addition
to activities on the first day of school I have found that having
each student filling out a 3x5 resource card valuable during the
year. Questions include the traditional "What is your definition
of science?" and what would YOU like to do in science this year?
A valuable addition has been does anyone in your family have a vocation
or hobby that might be of interest in a science classroom. I have
been blessed with a plethora of speakers to my middle school class
as a result of these responses. Ex: architects and builders for
structures units, a yo-yo expert to follow up on rotational motion
with tops and yo-yos, a variety of medical personnel, avid birders,
orienteers, science authors, a professional golfer for force and
motion, an astrophysicist, etc. the best to date...one of my students
told me about this "neat" couple on his street that gave out science
books for trick or treat; turned out to be Phillip and Phyllis Morrison
who visited our eighth grade classes showed the Powers of Ten Video,
gave every student meteorites, donated their book of the same to
the library and were fantastic.
